Wood vs. vinyl fence in Florida: which lasts longer?
Humidity, salt air and afternoon storms are hard on a fence. Here is how wood and vinyl really compare in Manatee County.

The short answer
Vinyl lasts longer with almost no upkeep. Pressure-treated wood costs less up front and looks warmer, but it needs attention every few years.
How Florida weather changes the math
- **Humidity and rain.** Wood swells, shrinks and can cup. Vinyl does not absorb water at all.
- **Salt air.** Near the water, salt speeds up the corrosion of nails, screws and hinges. We use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless hardware on coastal jobs.
- **Sun.** UV greys untreated wood within a season. Quality vinyl is UV-stabilized and holds its color.
- **Storms.** Both can take wind if the posts are set right. Depth and concrete matter more than material.
Cost per foot, installed
- Wood: $18-$25 per foot depending on height
- Vinyl: $19-$27 per foot depending on height
Add $300 per gate, and $225 if we are removing an existing fence.
Upkeep
Wood wants a clean and seal every 2-3 years. Vinyl wants a hose and maybe some soap.
Which we recommend
If you plan to stay in the home 10+ years, vinyl usually wins on total cost. If you want a natural look or the lowest price today, wood is a solid choice — just budget for sealing.
